Creation of 3D BIM Model for infrastructure construction in an island city in Qatar
A luxury island in the greenfield city of Lusail, Qatar is being developed. Infrastructure and landscaping are being done over an area 50 square kilometers. The development includes the construction of roads, fueling pier, all wet and dry utilities on the islands. The work incorporated all services including, but not limited to power, IT, Telecom, wet and dry utilities, landscape, signage, roadway lighting, traffic signals and gas networks.
Challenges: The size and complexity of the project, the updates at design stage and coordination challenges during construction stage, the project duration of over 4 years and daily laser scanning for monitoring construction progress.
Solution: Having a hybrid working team model where initially the design model was built by off-site team and the construction model by on-site team, solved a lot of the typical challenges. Working closely with the client and construction team gave a deeper insight into building and updating the model.
1. Creation of the 3D LOD 300 design model as per the design drawings.
2. Ongoing 3D laser scanning to gather updates on deviations at site and maintaining the as-built model based on the scans from site.
3. Clash coordination and resolution by interacting directly with the design and execution team. Excelize team of modellers, coordinators, scanning team and BIM manager not only assisted with the modelling work but also took the model to field. The construction team utilised the model to identify the potential construction challenges before execution.
